Why are you using social media for your business?
Because everyone tells you that you’re supposed to…
While these aren’t necessarily bad answers (except that last one), they each come with some pretty noticeable weaknesses:
Advertising can be a very expensive game to play.
The effects of branding and exposure are often difficult to quantify.
And doing stuff just because your friends are doing it is a great way to find yourself jumping off a cliff.
So if you’re social media strategy falls under one of those aforementioned topic… it’s time for a transformation. It’s time you narrow the focus of your social media efforts to one single goal…
Why? Because lead generation is important. It’s the lifeblood of your business. Without leads, you won’t make sales. And without sales, you won’t have much of an income.
I’m sure I don’t really have to convince you on this point. Actually, you’ve probably even Googled “how to make sales from social media” at some point in your life.
This is the answer…
Harness the power of social media to build a lead generating machine.
I’m not here to tell you it’s the easiest process in the world. Generating leads is a lot more specific than a goal like “getting your name out there” — so it will require focus and brain power and strategy.
Below I’ve drawn out a few action steps to point you in the right direction.
ATTRACT YOUR TRIBE
Why do business owners get so excited about social media? Because billions of people are using it.
But I have a warning for you… DO NOT treat social media like a numbers game. If you try to sell to everyone, you’ll probably end up selling to noone.
Instead, put in the time to do the research. Research the market. Research your competitors. Find out what hashtags are being used. Find out what type of posts get the highest engagement.
Dig deep and create a thorough and detailed avatar of your target client. You need to know them inside and out.
There are only three reasons why your social media isn’t already KILLING it…
1. Your content sucks
2. The right people aren’t seeing it
3. #2 happening because of #1
But if you do the legwork, and learn all about the deepest, darkest fears and desires that burn within your niche, you will fairly quickly solve all three.
HUNT THEM DOWN
You should not be using social media as a soapbox for your brand. Rather than broadcasts, think of your posts as conversation starters.
You should engage with your niche. Connect with influencers. Find hot button conversations and jump in the middle of them.
Participate in Facebook or LinkedIn groups and forums with zero-intentions to promote your business. Establish your presence and build credibility within the community.
You’ve done the research and you know where to find your target clients… why wait for them to come to you when you can reach out to them?
KEEP ATTRACTING YOUR TRIBE
Once you’ve got that Facebook like or Twitter follow it’s time to sell some product/service, right?
Not so fast. These sorts of social media conversions demand a very low threshold of commitment. You haven’t done much more than caught their eye.
That means you still have some work to do to build trust and turn them into a fan of your brand…
(Some say it takes an average of 9 touches before a prospect trusts a business enough to make a purchase).
You should limit your sales pitches, promo codes, affiliate offers, or any other types of posts that give your following the hard sell. Instead, try a 10-to-1 ratio of informative or nurturing posts to pure promotions and sales posts.
KEEP SOLID ANALYTICS
I really only have two things to say about keeping stats and analytics…
#1 – Super important.
#2 – Almost nobody is doing this effectively.
Can you put a value on each of your likes/follows/clicks?
Do you know exactly what the life cycle of a social media lead looks like?
Figure it out… you may be wasting a significant portion of your time on social media strategies that aren’t moving the needle…
…and if you’re running a lean machine of a business like most entrepreneurs, you probably can’t afford much wasted effort.
DON’T DO IT ALL YOURSELF
Social media is probably the biggest time vampire available on earth right now (besides maybe certain binge-able Netflix shows).
For some of us, opening up your Facebook page is like dipping your toes in a big puddle of quicksand in the middle of your office….
If you slip and fall in, you might never make it out.
And even if you don’t have a problem with getting distracted by social media… I can think of at least 11 higher leverage activities that you could be working on to grow your business.
I’m one of the world’s biggest fans of outsourcing.
Why not have someone else schedule your social media posts for the week and research hashtags, and moderate comments on your posts?
I guarantee the more you outsource, the quicker your business can grow. Not to mention, you can free up a ton of time by passing off the day-to-day low-skill tasks that have saturated your to-do lists.
